If you are planning to retire in the next 10 years or so, you may already have a target date in mind. If retirement is further down the road, it might be difficult to identify a specific timeline — but it’s never too early to consider the challenges and opportunities that come with different retirement ages. When Will You Retire? 6% Current workers typically anticipate retiring at a later age than what is actually reported by retirees (see chart). People are living longer and staying healthy and active later in life. And many people may need to work longer to build assets after a late start or to make up for investment losses. It’s also important to consider the possibility that your career could be cut short at any time. Almost half of retirees say they left the workforce earlier than planned, with many citing health problems or company changes.
